Oftentimes, students have difficulty understanding what makes a “mixture” a mixture.  It’s common for them to think that if you mix two substances together, it always produces a mixture.  In this trick, students see two glasses, an empty bottle, and two canisters.  One glass is full of milk, while the other is full of water.  Their properties can be discussed.  The milk and water are combined by pouring them into the clear bottle.  they are covered with the two metal canisters.  You explain that two properties of mixtures are that the substances can be physically separated, and the “parts” keep their own individual properties.

At your command, the liquid in the bottle visibly diminishes, until the bottle is completely empty.  When the covers are lifted off the two empty glasses, the milk is back in its original glass, and the water is in the other glass.
